Domaine Ponsot Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Clos des Monts Luisants Vieilles Vignes Blanc 1.5L MAGNUM 2021

This 1.5-litre magnum holds Clos des Monts Luisants Vieilles Vignes, the only premier cru in Burgundy made entirely from Aligoté and a Ponsot monopole.

For many years it was also the sole premier cru white in Morey-Saint-Denis. The vineyard once carried small amounts of Chardonnay and Pinot Gouges, a white mutation of Pinot Noir, but from 2004 the wine returned to pure Aligoté, drawn largely from vines planted in 1911. The Vieilles Vignes designation records those ancient plants; since 2015 a parcel of younger fruit has made up about 20% of the blend, bringing the average vine age to roughly 90 years. Grapes go into the domaine's pneumatic press, then ferment in a mix of tank and barrel before ageing in wholly neutral oak, with barriques between 10 and 60 years old. The magnum slows the wine's development further, which suits a white already built for the long term.

Worth cellaring for a decade or more before opening; serve at 10-12°C with turbot, roast veal or aged comté.
