Description
Domaine Ponsot Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Cuvée des Alouettes comes from the premier cru section of Monts Luisants, ploughed by horse and rooted in white oolitic limestone.
Much of the Monts Luisants vineyard in Morey-Saint-Denis is today classified as Clos de la Roche, and what remains as premier cru is the source of this wine. Ponsot labels it Cuvée des Alouettes, an alouette being a lark, to distinguish it from the white Clos des Monts Luisants that comes from the same lieu-dit. This section is now worked by horse, the vines are between 30 and 50 years old, and the white oolitic limestone beneath them typically gives a deep, slow-to-unwind red Burgundy. Around a decade in bottle is usually needed before it opens into the vivid, flowing, Chambolle-like premier cru it becomes, and previous bottlings under this label have often been described as tasting like a scaled-down Bonnes Mares or Clos de la Roche.
Best from eight to ten years and good for well beyond that. Serve at 16-18°C with roast pigeon, veal or a mushroom fricassée.
