Domaine Ponsot Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Cuvée des Alouettes 2020

Domaine Ponsot Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Cuvée des Alouettes comes from the premier cru section of Monts Luisants, most of which now falls within Clos de la Roche.

Monts Luisants is a climat divided between village, premier cru and grand cru status, the highest portion classified within Clos de la Roche. This wine comes from the premier cru part, and Ponsot labels it Cuvée des Alouettes, after the lark, to distinguish it from the white Clos des Monts Luisants made from the same lieu-dit. The vines are between twenty-three and thirty years old, rooted in white oolitic limestone, and this section is now ploughed by horse. Historically the site gave a deep, slow-developing red that took about a decade to open into something closer in style to Chambolle-Musigny; warmer seasons have made it more approachable young. Its position bordering Gevrey-Chambertin shows in the depth and structure it retains.

Drink from four or five years and over the following fifteen. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, braised beef cheek or mushrooms on toast.
