Description
Cuvée des Alouettes is Ponsot's red from the premier cru section of Morey-Saint-Denis' Monts Luisants, named for the lark to set it apart from the domaine's white from the same lieu-dit.
Monts Luisants is an unusual climat: part of it is village land, part premier cru, and the upper portion falls within the Clos de la Roche grand cru. The premier cru section that gives this wine is now ploughed by horse, and the vines, between 23 and 30 years old, are rooted in white oolitic limestone. Historically that combination produced a deep, slow-unwinding Morey that only opened into something more flowing and Chambolle-like after about ten years in bottle; warmer seasons have made the young wines noticeably more approachable, though the site still borders Gevrey-Chambertin and shows some of that commune's depth and frame. Yields here are tiny, and in this release only four barrels were made from a crop of 8.5 hectolitres per hectare.
Drinkable now with air, and better still after five to ten years; serve at 16-18°C with roast pork, coq au vin or earthy mushroom dishes.
