Domaine Ponsot Morey-Saint-Denis Cuvée des Grives 2019

Domaine Ponsot Morey-Saint-Denis Cuvée des Grives is a village wine from a single high plot behind the family's Petit Château, first harvested in 1872.

Morey-Saint-Denis sits between Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny in the Côte de Nuits, and Ponsot has been at the top of its slope since the estate's founding harvest. A grive is the bird we call a thrush, and this is one of the domaine's foundational wines, drawn from 0.62 hectares in the section of Monts Luisants classified as village, directly above the premier cru part of the same vineyard. At around 350 metres it is unusually high: most village wine in Morey comes from some 150 metres lower down the Côte. The soil is extremely rocky, covered in Comblanchien limestone scree, and the neighbouring forest brings shade and cool night air. Ripening is drawn out as a result, and the wine is typically more perfumed, savoury and mineral than village Morey generally runs.

Give it three to five years and expect it to hold well beyond that. Serve at 16-18°C with roast pigeon, veal or a plate of soft washed-rind cheese.
