Description
Domaine Ponsot Morey-Saint-Denis Cuvée des Grives comes from a single 0.62-hectare plot at 350 metres, the highest village land on the Morey slope.
A grive is a thrush, and this is one of the Ponsot family's founding wines, first harvested in 1872. The parcel sits directly behind the domaine's Petit Château at the very top of the slope, in the section of Monts Luisants classified as village, immediately above the premier cru part of the same climat. At 350 metres the site is well above the 200-odd metres where most Morey village vines grow, and the soil is extremely rocky, covered in Comblanchien limestone scree. Shade and cool air drawn down from the forest above lengthen the ripening period. The outcome is a more perfumed, savoury and mineral village wine than the appellation usually gives, and one that has become increasingly useful to the domaine in warm, dry seasons.
Drink from two or three years and across the following decade. Serve at 16-18°C with roast chicken, charcuterie or a mushroom tart.
