Description
Domaine Rossignol-Février Pommard is a village red Burgundy from the Côte de Beaune commune long regarded as the sturdiest of its neighbours.
Pommard lies between Beaune and Volnay, and although it holds no grand cru it has a long list of well regarded premiers crus, Les Rugiens and Les Épenots among them. The clay here is heavier and the soils carry more iron than in Volnay next door, which is the usual explanation for the broader, firmer style the commune has been known for since long before appellation lines were drawn. Rossignol is one of the old vigneron names of Volnay, and the domaine works parcels across both communes. Fruit is hand harvested, fermented in the traditional Burgundian manner and matured in oak barrel, with new wood used sparingly so the site is left to speak.
Worth an hour in a decanter and served at around 16 degrees with roast lamb, duck or a mature hard cheese; it will repay five to ten years in a cool cellar.
