Description
Saint Damien Les Souteyrades is a single site Gigondas from very old Grenache on the terraces above the village.
Les Souteyrades takes its name from the dry stone terraces, the souteyrades of Provencal, that hold the vineyard soil on the steeper ground beneath the Dentelles de Montmirail. Working at this height on limestone scree means smaller berries, later ripening and a firmer natural acidity than the sandier land at the foot of the slope. Joel Saurel farms the parcel by hand, picking in successive passes, and the cuvee is built on Grenache vines of considerable age with a portion of Mourvedre for structure and grip. Fermentation is with indigenous yeast in concrete and the wine is raised in tank and old wood, the house style avoiding new oak entirely.
A dense, tightly built Gigondas that deserves cellaring, it suits venison, wild boar and slow braised beef; serve at around 17 to 18 degrees.
