Description
Saint Damien Gigondas vieilles vignes is the estate's benchmark cru red, drawn from its older Grenache below the Dentelles de Montmirail.
Gigondas lies against the limestone teeth of the Dentelles de Montmirail, and its vineyards run from the warm clay and sand of the lower slopes up onto cooler scree and rock at three hundred metres and more. Grenache must make up the majority of the blend, with Syrah or Mourvedre completing it, and the combination of altitude and limestone gives a cru that is powerful but firmer and fresher than much of the southern Rhone. Domaine Saint Damien is run by Joel Saurel from the village itself, farming old vines with hand harvesting and no herbicides. This cuvee is Grenache led with Mourvedre, fermented in concrete and raised in tank and old foudre without new oak.
Powerful yet savoury rather than sweet, it suits roast lamb, game stews and hard sheep's cheese; serve at around 17 degrees.
