Description
Domaine Santa Duc Gigondas 'Clos des Hospices' is a single-parcel Gigondas made entirely from Grenache, off 2.43 hectares of walled hillside below the Dentelles de Montmirail.
Six generations of the Gras family have worked this corner of the Southern Rhône, and Benjamin Gras took over from his father Yves in 2017, adding Demeter biodynamic certification to the estate's organic Ecocert status. The rows here are long and narrow, face north-west and sit at 350 metres ringed by seven hectares of woodland, over grey marl thick with limestone; the site was put back in order in 1994. Picking is by hand, destemming partial, and fermentation runs twenty to thirty days on indigenous yeasts. Eighteen months follow in 36-hectolitre Stockinger foudres and eight-hectolitre terracotta amphorae, then bottling with no fining or filtration.
Red cherry, rhubarb and pomegranate come first, then violet, wild thyme and a dusting of white pepper over fine, lacy tannins and a stony close. Pour it at 16-18°C. Try it with a daube of beef, roast duck with olives, or grilled lamb cutlets and rosemary.
