Description

Domaine Schoffit Chasselas vieilles vignes is a rare varietal bottling of an old and unfashionable Alsace grape, made from old vines on the stony ground outside Colmar.

Chasselas was once planted widely across Alsace and now accounts for a tiny fraction of the region's vineyard, kept mostly for blending into Edelzwicker; it survives as a wine in its own name only where a grower has old vines worth the trouble. Domaine Schoffit is based in Colmar, where Bernard Schoffit built the estate on parcels in the Harth, a warm, stony, free-draining terrace on the plain east of the town, before adding the steep volcanic Rangen at Thann. The old Chasselas vines here are picked ripe, pressed gently and fermented dry in tank without oak, which keeps the grape's soft texture and low acidity intact. Residual sugar is negligible, under four grams per litre. The domaine works its vineyards organically.

Light and gently textured rather than aromatic, it is an aperitif wine and a good match for charcuterie, quiche and freshwater fish; serve chilled at around 9 degrees.
