Description
Schoffit Gewurztraminer VT Rangen Grand Cru is a late harvest Gewurztraminer from the volcanic Rangen de Thann, the steepest and most southerly grand cru in Alsace.
Rangen rises above the town of Thann at the southern tip of the Alsace vineyard, a wall of dark volcanic rock that climbs to gradients approaching seventy percent and faces due south over the Thur. Domaine Schoffit, based in Colmar, farms a parcel here known as the Clos Saint Theobald, terraced because no machine can work the slope. Vendanges Tardives is a legally defined Alsace category rather than a house term: the fruit must be hand picked at a high minimum must weight, chaptalisation is banned and the wine is held back before release. This bottling carries 88 grams per litre of residual sugar, so the sweetness is set against the smoky, saline grip the volcanic soil gives.
Rich but firm rather than syrupy, it suits foie gras, mature Munster and blue cheese as readily as spiced dishes; serve at around 10 degrees.
