Description
Domaine Schoffit Muscat Rangen Grand Cru comes from the estate's Clos Saint-Théobald in the Rangen de Thann, the steepest and most southerly grand cru in Alsace.
The Rangen rises above the town of Thann at the far south western end of the Alsace vineyard, a slope of dark volcanic rock so steep that it has to be terraced and worked entirely by hand, with gradients approaching one hundred per cent in places. It faces due south and is the only grand cru in the region on volcanic soil, which gives its wines a smoky, mineral bite and unusual density. Domaine Schoffit owns the Clos Saint-Théobald, the lower section of the cru, and has farmed it since the late 1980s, working organically. Muscat is rarely planted on a site of this stature; here it is fermented dry, finishing at around three and a half grams of residual sugar, and raised without new oak.
Dry, taut and far more structured than Muscat usually is, it suits asparagus, goat's cheese and lightly spiced dishes; serve chilled at around 10 degrees.
