Description
Schoffit Pinot Gris Rangen Grand Cru is grown on the Clos Saint Theobald, the estate's terraced parcel on the volcanic slope at Thann.
Rangen de Thann is the most southerly and the steepest of the fifty one Alsace grand crus, a dark slope of volcanic grauwacke and tuff that falls to the Thur at gradients approaching seventy percent. Pinot Gris is one of the four noble grapes permitted under grand cru rules and it takes particularly well to this ground, gaining weight and a smoky, gunflint edge the variety rarely shows elsewhere. Schoffit farms the Clos Saint Theobald within the cru, hand working terraces no machine can reach and picking late to gain ripeness. The wine carries 26 grams per litre of residual sugar, so it is off dry rather than sweet.
Broad and gently off dry, it is a match for foie gras terrine, roast pork with fruit, smoked eel and Munster; serve at around 11 degrees.
