Domaine Schoffit Pinot Gris SGN Rangen Larmes de Lave Grand Cru 375ml 2001

Schoffit Pinot Gris SGN Rangen Larmes de Lave is the estate's rarest late harvest bottling, named for the volcanic rock of the slope it comes from.

Larmes de Lave, tears of lava, is made only in exceptional years from the most heavily botrytised fruit on the Clos Saint Theobald, Schoffit's terraced holding in Rangen de Thann. Selection de Grains Nobles requires berry by berry picking in repeated passes through the vineyard, no chaptalisation and a long wait before release, and at this level yields are tiny, which is why the wine is bottled in half bottle. The wine carries 425 grams per litre of residual sugar, a figure at the outer limit of what Alsace produces and closer to a Trockenbeerenauslese than a conventional dessert wine, held in balance by acidity and by the smoky mineral grip of the volcanic soil.

Intensely sweet and viscous, it is a wine for a small glass at the end of a meal, with Roquefort or simply on its own; serve at around 10 degrees.
