Domaine Schoffit Rangen Pinot Gris Vendanges Tardives 2019

Domaine Schoffit Rangen Pinot Gris Vendanges Tardives is a late harvested Pinot Gris from the volcanic grand cru above Thann, at the southern edge of Alsace.

The Rangen de Thann is the southernmost Alsace grand cru and by some way the steepest, a terraced amphitheatre of dark volcanic sandstone and greywacke falling at close to forty five degrees above the river Thur. The soil is warm and free draining, and gives wines of unusual mineral drive and smoky depth. Schoffit farms the Clos Saint-Theobald within the cru, working the slope by hand. Vendanges Tardives is a legally defined Alsace category requiring high must weights at picking and forbidding chaptalisation; the fruit is gathered in successive tries and fermented slowly, stopping at around 85 grams per litre of residual sugar. Pinot Gris takes botrytis readily and builds weight quickly, and the volcanic subsoil here supplies the smoky, savoury counterweight that keeps a wine of this richness in proportion.

Broad and honeyed but savoury underneath, it suits foie gras, roast pork, mushroom dishes and washed rind cheese; serve at 8 to 10 degrees.
