Description
Domaine Schoffit Riesling Rangen Grand Cru comes from the Clos Saint-Théobald, the estate's terraced holding on the volcanic slope above Thann.
Rangen de Thann is the southernmost grand cru in Alsace and the steepest, a dark volcanic amphitheatre of greywacke and tuff falling to the Thur at gradients that make every task a hand operation. The rock warms quickly and holds heat, while the exposure and the cool air off the river draw the harvest late, so Riesling ripens fully here without losing acidity and takes on the smoky, flinty character the site is known for. Domaine Schoffit farms the Clos Saint-Théobald within the cru organically, terraced and worked without machinery, picking by hand and pressing whole bunches. The wine is fermented dry and carries around 4.5 grams per litre of residual sugar.
Powerful, dry and built to age, it suits lobster, roast veal and mature hard cheese and rewards decanting; serve at around 11 degrees.
