Description
Schoffit Riesling Sommerberg Grand Cru is a dry Riesling from one of the steep granite grand crus west of Colmar.
Sommerberg runs along the south facing slope above Niedermorschwihr and Katzenthal, where the Vosges open into a narrow valley. Its bedrock is two mica granite, weathered to a coarse sandy soil that drains hard and gives Riesling a fine, tight, almost saline shape rather than breadth; the gradient reaches around forty five percent and the terraces have to be worked by hand. Grand cru rules in Alsace restrict plantings to the four noble grapes, cap yields and require hand harvesting. Domaine Schoffit, based at Colmar, is known for low yields and late picking across its range, and this wine carries 3.3 grams per litre of residual sugar, which leaves it dry.
Firm and mineral in style, it suits river fish, scallops, roast poultry and Alsace charcuterie; serve at around 10 degrees.
