Domaine Schoffit Riesling VT Rangen Grand Cru 2015

Schoffit Riesling VT Rangen Grand Cru is a late harvest Riesling from the volcanic Rangen de Thann, made only in ripe seasons.

Vendanges Tardives is a controlled Alsace category: the fruit must be hand picked at a minimum must weight, chaptalisation is forbidden, the wine has to be declared at harvest and it cannot be released for eighteen months. Riesling carries a lower sugar threshold than Gewurztraminer or Pinot Gris but is the hardest of the noble grapes to ripen that far, so late harvest bottlings appear only in the warmest seasons. The fruit comes from Schoffit's Clos Saint Theobald on Rangen, the steep volcanic cru above Thann whose dark rock ripens fruit while the site's exposure and the river air hold acidity, and the terraces there are worked entirely by hand. The wine carries 63 grams per litre of residual sugar.

Sweet but cut through by Riesling acidity, it works with foie gras, blue cheese and fruit tarts, or on its own after a meal; serve at around 9 degrees.
