Domaine Stéphane Aladame Montagny 1er Cru Les Coères 2021

Les Coères is a Montagny Premier Cru from Stéphane Aladame, whose holding here runs to just half a hectare.

Montagny sits at the southern end of the Côte Chalonnaise and is planted entirely to Chardonnay, with an unusually generous spread of Premier Cru land. Aladame's parcels lie in the Montagny-lès-Buxy sector of Les Coères, an east-facing site at 290 metres on deep marl and blue clay. He works two parcels, the older planted in 1985, supplemented by a small proportion of Chardonnay Muscaté, an old strain of the variety that Benjamin Leroux also works with in the Narvaux terroir at Meursault. The wine ferments and matures for ten months in neutral 350-litre oak barrels, so the fruit is framed rather than marked by wood. It is denser than the domaine's entry wines while keeping the finesse, definition and salinity that define the house style.

Approachable now and worth three to five years in the cellar; serve at 10 to 12°C with roast chicken, pork terrine or a firm goat's cheese.
