Domaine Theulot-Juillot Mercurey 1er Cru La Cailloute 2022

Domaine Theulot-Juillot's Mercurey 1er Cru La Cailloute is a red from a 1.73-hectare monopole above Les Croichots, acquired by the family three generations ago.

Mercurey is the largest of the Côte Chalonnaise villages and the one with the deepest reputation for Pinot Noir, with premier cru sites strung along the slopes on either side of the town. La Cailloute lies above Les Croichots and belongs to the domaine alone. A band of grey marlstone against the forest at the top of the vineyard is used for white; the red comes from two parcels of thickish red clay over hard oolitic limestone. The first was planted in 1979 and brings finesse, the second a year later and supplies structure and colour, and the two are blended. Nathalie Theulot, whose grandfather bought the site, calls this cuvée mon chouchou. Raised in barrel, it shows the domaine's most polished side: sweet, flowing cherry fruit, svelte tannins and a long, balanced close. Jasper Morris MW has described it as noted for its variations on a theme of cherry.

Approachable now but built to reward five to eight years in bottle. Try it with duck breast, mushroom risotto or a mild washed-rind cheese, served at 16–18°C.
