Domaine Theulot-Juillot Mercurey 1er Cru Les Champs Martins Blanc 2022

Domaine Theulot-Juillot Mercurey 1er Cru Les Champs Martins Blanc comes from a small parcel of 35-year-old Chardonnay at the top of a vineyard planted mostly to Pinot Noir.

Mercurey is the largest appellation of the Côte Chalonnaise and is predominantly red, with white making up a small share of the plantings. Les Champs Martins, which borders Les Combins to the west, has historically been counted among the village’s finest vineyards, and most of the leading growers hold a piece of it. Theulot Juillot works two south-facing parcels of mature Pinot Noir there, and separately a small plot of 35-year-old Chardonnay on grey Oxfordian marlstone at the western-exposed top of the climat; roughly a fifth of the vineyard overall is planted to white. The wine ferments naturally in oak barrels, 30 per cent of them new. Nathalie Juillot regards this as the best terroir in the village for white wine, and the style is sleek and chalky rather than broad.

Approachable now and will develop over five to seven years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled prawns or a Gruyère tart.
