Description
Domaine Theulot-Juillot Mercurey 1er Cru Les Champs Martins Rouge comes from two mature, due-south parcels in what has long been held to be one of Mercurey's best vineyards.
Mercurey is the largest of the Côte Chalonnaise appellations and the most red-dominated, with Pinot Noir on clay and limestone slopes south-west of Chalon. Les Champs Martins borders Les Combins to the west and has historically been counted among the village's finest climats — all the leading growers of Mercurey hold something here. Theulot-Juillot works two parcels of mature vines on the part of the slope that faces due south. As Jasper Morris has noted of the site, the reddish soil carries a plethora of small white stones, which tends to give rounded wines with a degree of elegance rather than the firmer, more rustic style Mercurey was once known for.
Worth three or four years and good for a decade. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, beef bourguignon or a semi-hard cheese.
