Domaine Theulot-Juillot Mercurey 1er Cru Les Saumonts Blanc 2022

Domaine Theulot-Juillot Mercurey 1er Cru Les Saumonts Blanc is one of the very few white wines made from this red-soil premier cru.

Mercurey is the largest appellation of the Côte Chalonnaise and overwhelmingly a red wine village, so a white from a premier cru site is unusual. Les Saumonts abuts Les Puillets but faces a little further south, sitting high on the hillside between 300 and 325 metres and surrounded by forest, in the north-western corner of the commune. The soils below the hilltop are reddish clay and limestone dotted with small fossils, red terroir turned to white wine. Domaine Theulot-Juillot works around eleven hectares in the village and Nathalie Theulot makes the wines. The massale-selection vines here were planted in 1998, and the wine is raised in one-third new oak barrels. It carries more body than the domaine's Les Champs Martin blanc while keeping the same tight weave of texture and linear freshness.

Drinking well now and worth holding five to seven years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork, poached chicken or a soft washed-rind cheese.
