Domaine Vincent Dancer Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Romanée 2023

La Romanée is arguably Chassagne-Montrachet's finest Premier Cru, and Dancer's vines sit at its lower edge, close to Tête du Clos.

La Romanée lies high on the Chassagne slope, a sunny, rocky vineyard sheltered from the wind, where altitude, limestone-rich soils and a warm aspect combine in a way more usually associated with Grand Cru sites. Vincent Dancer's vines were established mainly in the late 1970s, with a smaller parcel planted in 1991, at the bottom of the vineyard very near his Tête du Clos holding, which makes the two wines an instructive pair. The domaine works the vineyards with low yields and vinifies whites simply, with natural fermentation, sparing new oak and long maturation on lees, so that differences between neighbouring plots stay legible. The result here is concentrated and intensely mineral rather than showy.

Give it three to five years and drink across the following decade or more. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled crayfish, roast veal or aged gruyère.
