Domaine Vincent Dancer Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Tête du Clos 2020

Tête du Clos is a climat at the rocky upper reach of Morgeot, the largest of Chassagne's Premiers Crus, and Dancer bottles it separately from his Morgeot.

Tête du Clos lies at the apex of the Morgeot vineyard, where there is very little topsoil over white clay and surfacing limestone. That thin, stony ground gives a wine both firmer and more mineral than Morgeot's lower sections, which is why growers speak of it in the same breath as the crus above the village. Vincent Dancer, an engineer by training, took over family parcels in 1996 at twenty-two and built his cellar the year after; the domaine runs to around six hectares across Chassagne, Puligny, Meursault, Pommard and Beaune, and his son Théo now handles the day-to-day. In the cellar there is spontaneous fermentation with no additions, no bâtonnage, used barrels with little or no new wood, and bottling without fining or filtration.

Give it three years and drink over the following decade. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled prawns or a mild washed-rind cheese.
