Description
Domaine Xavier Monnot Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is a white wine from the most celebrated white Grand Cru of the Côte de Beaune.
The hill of Corton rises above the villages of Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses and Ladoix, and Corton-Charlemagne occupies its upper reaches, where the marl is paler, the limestone closer and the aspect swings from south to west. Chardonnay planted here ripens slowly and holds its acidity, which is why the wines are famously slow to open and long lived. The name comes from the tradition that the emperor Charlemagne held land on the hill and had white vines planted so that red wine would no longer stain his beard, a story with more charm than documentation. Xavier Monnot farms from Meursault and makes his whites in the classical way, fermented and aged in barrel.
Serve at around 12 to 13 degrees with lobster, poultry in cream, or aged hard cheese, and give it five to ten years in the cellar where circumstances allow.
