Domaine Xavier Monnot Volnay 1er Cru Clos Chênes 2021

Domaine Xavier Monnot Volnay 1er Cru Clos Chênes is a red Burgundy from one of Volnay's largest and most respected Premier Cru sites.

Clos des Chênes occupies the upper slope at the southern end of Volnay, running up towards the boundary with Monthélie, on thin stony soil where the limestone is barely covered. Height and poor ground make for a firmer, more structured style than the softer Volnay climats lower down, and the wines from here are usually the ones asked to wait. Volnay has no Grand Cru, but it has long been considered the most elegant red commune of the Côte de Beaune, a reputation that goes back to the dukes of Burgundy. Xavier Monnot farms from Meursault and makes his reds traditionally, fermented in vat and raised in oak barrels.

Serve at around 16 degrees with duck, game birds, or veal, and give it five years or more in the cellar before opening.
