Domaine Yves Cuilleron Côte-Rôtie 'Bassenon' Syrah Viognier 2023

Domaine Yves Cuilleron Côte-Rôtie 'Bassenon' Syrah Viognier comes off south-facing terraces at the quiet southern end of the appellation, perfumed and supple in style.

The Coteau de Semons holds a hectare and a half of terraces facing south, on granite and gneiss, with a stream running below that gave the parcel its name. Syrah leads, joined by roughly ten percent Viognier that is picked and fermented with it. Bunches arrive by hand, spend about three weeks fermenting in open vats, then eighteen months in barriques.

Violets and red berries come first, and the palate stays light on its feet with tannins that are fine and unobtrusive. Give it an hour open, pour at 16°C, and bring out roast duck, lamb, or a rack of veal under a herb crust.
