Domaine Yves Cuilleron Côte-Rôtie 'Lieu-Dit Bonnivières' Syrah 2023

Domaine Yves Cuilleron Côte-Rôtie 'Lieu-Dit Bonnivières' Syrah is a single-vineyard Syrah from the northernmost appellation of the Rhône.

Above Ampuis, the slopes are so steep that dry-stone walls hold the terraces up and every job is done by hand. Schist and mica-schist soils facing south-east into the morning sun give Syrah perfume and finesse more than mass. The estate, based at Chavanay, owns parcels right across the appellation and bottles several separately by site; this is one of them. Some whole bunches go into the ferment for lift, and the wine spends about eighteen months in French barrels, only some of them new.

Fine-grained but full, with black fruit, violets, olive and pepper over supple tannin. Open it an hour early and serve at 16–18°C with roast lamb, duck, game or grilled beef.
