Domaine Yves Cuilleron Saint Joseph 'Les Pierres Sèches' Syrah 375ml 2023

Domaine Yves Cuilleron Saint Joseph 'Les Pierres Sèches' is a peppery Syrah from the granite terraces of Saint-Joseph, in a half bottle.

The name refers to the dry-stone walls that prop up the steep slopes along the right bank, where the best sites of this fifty-kilometre appellation have to be worked by hand. The Chavanay domaine has been in Yves Cuilleron's hands since 1987 and now farms across four northern Rhône appellations, with a style built on precision and aroma, not heavy extraction. This one is all Syrah, mostly destemmed, given a moderate maceration and aged largely in used barrels, which lets the granite and the grape's black-pepper lift show clearly.

Black fruit, violet and pepper with a fine, savoury edge, in a medium-bodied frame. The 375ml bottle is just right for two on a weeknight; pour at 16–17°C with roast pork, charcuterie or grilled lamb.
