Dominus 2014

Dominus is the Napa Valley estate of Bordeaux's Christian Moueix, and the 2014 is a focused, silky vintage from a warm, dry year.

The wine comes from the Napanook vineyard in Yountville, a historic site once owned by John Daniel Jr of Inglenook fame. Moueix, long associated with the great wines of Pomerol, partnered with Daniel's daughters in 1982 and later took sole ownership. The vineyard sits on gravelly loam at the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains and is farmed with a Bordeaux mindset: restraint, careful canopy work and picking for freshness. Cabernet Sauvignon forms the core, with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot in support. 2014 was another dry year in California, bringing an early harvest and concentrated fruit, and the wine shows cardamom, forest floor and deep blue fruit, with silky tannins in focused layers.

Serve at around 17 degrees after an hour or two in a decanter. Grilled wagyu, lamb rack or a porcini risotto are all good matches, and it will continue to age gracefully for many years.
