Dominus 2018

Dominus is one of Napa Valley's most distinctive reds, and the 2018 is a balanced, long and polished vintage.

The winery, designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron and completed in the late 1990s, is famous for its walls of local basalt held in wire cages, which keep the cellar naturally cool. Around it lies the Napanook vineyard in Yountville, planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The approach reflects the Moueix family's Right Bank heritage: harvest dates chosen for freshness, gentle extraction and a measured use of new oak. 2018 was a long, even growing season with a generous crop, and the wine carries sweet blue fruit, jasmine, cardamom and plum, with real focus and a lifted, lengthy finish.

Lovely now with a generous decant, it has the structure for another decade or more of development. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees with slow-roasted lamb shoulder, beef short ribs or aged Gouda.
