Dominus 2023

Dominus is a Bordeaux-inspired red from the Napanook vineyard in Yountville, and the 2023 is deep, precise and finely balanced.

The site lies on the western side of the Napa Valley floor, where alluvial gravel washed down from the Mayacamas range drains freely and keeps vine vigour in check. A cooler, later season than usual in 2023 gave a long hang time and slow ripening, which suits the estate's preference for freshness and restraint over sheer power. Cabernet Sauvignon leads, supported by Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and the wine is aged in French oak. Fruit not selected for the grand vin goes into the estate's second label, Napanook. The result shows cedar, gentle spice, wild berries and a hint of cocoa, with a finely etched, precise finish.

As a young release it will benefit from several years in the cellar, but decanting will open it up for a special dinner now. Serve at around 16 to 18 degrees with lamb loin, a mushroom-crusted beef fillet or a wedge of aged cheddar.
