Description
Dormilona Malbec is a Margaret River Malbec with a splash of Tempranillo.
Malbec is a minor player in Margaret River, usually kept for blending, so a straight bottling is worth noticing. These rows sit at Willyabrup on gravelly loam over granite. Jo Perry hand harvested and destemmed the fruit into open fermenters, where it spent a fortnight on skins, then basket pressed it off to tank and blended in five per cent Tempranillo to loosen the wine up. No oak was used at all. What gives it structure instead is the oxidative handling through fermentation and pressing, which builds a firmer, more resolved tannin than the variety usually shows.
Violet and dark plum, with an inky depth and a dry, slightly rustic tannin that oak would have masked. Serve at 16 degrees. It likes grilled beef, empanadas, a lamb pie, or chorizo straight off the barbecue.
