Description
Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Altenberg Riesling is a Wachenheim Erste Lage, bottled under the estate's P.C. classification and sealed with a DIAM closure.
Altenberg lies on the upper part of the Wachenheim slope, where the limestone content of the soil rises and the weathered sandstone thins out. Limestone is comparatively unusual in the Mittelhaardt and lends the wine a chalky, saline firmness rather than the broader fruit of the warmer sandstone sites. Dr. Bürklin-Wolf ranks it P.C., the estate's equivalent of Premier Cru, within a classification it revived from its own nineteenth-century vineyard records. Farming is biodynamic and Demeter certified. Hand-picked fruit is whole-bunch pressed, fermented with ambient yeasts in large old oak, and matured on fine lees before being bottled dry under DIAM, chosen for its consistency over natural cork.
Dry, chalky and long, a wine for the table rather than the aperitif; serve at 11 to 12 degrees with sole, veal, or roast chicken.
