Dry River Pinot Noir 2023

Dry River Pinot Noir is a savoury, deeply layered Martinborough red from a challenging season.

Founded in 1979, Dry River works small, low-yielding blocks on the free-draining terraces around Martinborough, where clay and river stones sit beneath the vines. The winery says the clay gives this wine its texture while the stones frame its length. 2023 brought real challenges in the region, and the resulting wine leans towards darker, blue-toned fruit, herbs, spice and a savoury, umami character, with young oak that will integrate over time. The winery sees it as a return to the spirit of Dry River's earliest wines.

Given time, this one opens up: decant it if you are drinking it in the next couple of years, or cellar it for longer. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16 degrees, with slow-cooked lamb, game birds or wild mushroom risotto.
