Eden Road Canberra Riesling 2018

Eden Road Canberra Riesling is a dry Riesling from the Canberra District, now with some bottle age.

The Canberra District is high, continental country: vineyards sit well above the coastal plain, and cold nights hold acidity in a way few warm-country Australian regions manage. That suits Riesling, one of the two varieties the region built its reputation on. This producer draws on several sites across southern New South Wales, choosing ground by variety instead of holding to a single estate. A 2018 Riesling now has several years in bottle, which is when the variety begins to earn its keep, as the primary fruit recedes and the toast and kerosene character of mature dry Riesling comes through.

Lime and green apple are giving way to honey and a hint of kerosene, over a dry, tightly wound palate. Serve it cold, 8 to 10 degrees. It suits oysters, sashimi, a Thai salad, or roast pork with crackling.
