Eden Road Canberra Syrah 2017

Eden Road Canberra Syrah is a cool-climate Syrah from the Canberra District.

Syrah in the Canberra District is a different animal from Barossa Shiraz: the altitude and the cold nights push it towards pepper, florals and a finer tannin, closer in spirit to the northern Rhône, and the choice of the word Syrah on the label is a signal of intent. Vineyards around Murrumbateman and the hills nearby sit high enough that ripening finishes late in a long, dry autumn. By 2017 this style was well established in the region, and a wine from that vintage now has the better part of a decade in bottle behind it.

With this much age, the fruit has moved towards dried plum and black olive, with white pepper still there and tannins well settled. Decant it, and serve at 16 to 17 degrees. Good with braised beef, roast duck, a mushroom pie, or hard cheese.
