Description
Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese comes from the Scharzhofberg on the Saar, one of the handful of vineyards that can fairly be called the greatest in Germany.
The Müller family has held the Scharzhof, beneath Wiltingen, since 1797, when an ancestor acquired it at auction following the secularisation of church land under the French occupation. The Scharzhofberg rises behind the house, a steep south-facing slope of weathered blue Devonian slate with a good part of the vineyard still on ungrafted vines of considerable age. Auslese is made from bunches selected for their ripeness at harvest, usually with a share touched by botrytis, pressed whole and fermented very slowly in old Fuder casks with the cellar's ambient yeasts. The ferment stops of its own accord, leaving a naturally sweet wine of remarkably low alcohol, made in tiny quantities.
Serve at around 8 to 10 degrees on its own, or with blue cheese or fruit-based desserts; wines of this class routinely last for several decades in a cool cellar.
