Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett 2022

Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett is the lightest of the great wines of the Scharzhofberg, the Saar vineyard that stands at the summit of German Riesling.

The Müller family has lived at the Scharzhof, below Wiltingen, since 1797, when an ancestor bought the estate at auction after church lands were secularised. The Scharzhofberg itself is a steep, south-facing slope of weathered blue Devonian slate, cool even by Saar standards, with old and in places ungrafted vines. Kabinett is the first rung of the German ripeness ladder, picked earliest and made without any concentration of the fruit: whole bunches are pressed gently, the juice ferments slowly in old wooden Fuder with the cellar's own yeasts, and the ferment halts naturally, leaving a small amount of sweetness at alcohol levels often below eight per cent.

Serve well chilled, at around 8 degrees, as an aperitif or with crab, sashimi or lightly spiced Asian dishes; it will also age for decades.
