Description
Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese comes from the Scharzhofberg above Wiltingen, the vineyard that more than any other defines Riesling on the Saar.
The Müller family has held the Scharzhof since 1797, when an ancestor bought it at auction after the secularisation of church land, and the estate has passed from one Egon to the next ever since. The Scharzhofberg is a steep south-facing slope of weathered blue Devonian slate, cold and slow to ripen, with a good proportion of old ungrafted vines. Spätlese, literally a late picking, sits a step above Kabinett on the ripeness scale and is harvested in later passes through the vineyard. The fruit is whole-bunch pressed and fermented at length in old Fuder casks with ambient yeasts, the ferment stopping naturally and leaving sweetness balanced by the Saar's high natural acidity.
Serve at around 8 to 10 degrees as an aperitif, with spiced Asian food or with fresh fruit; it rewards long cellaring, often for thirty years or more.
