Empire of Dirt Blood Shiraz 2021

Empire of Dirt Blood Shiraz is a spicy, medium-bodied Shiraz from Geelong, south-west of Melbourne.

Phylloxera wiped out the district's vines in the 1870s, after decades as one of Victoria's most important wine areas, and serious replanting didn't start until the 1960s. These days it spreads from the Moorabool Valley to the Bellarine Peninsula and the Surf Coast. Maritime air gives this grape pepper, spice and fresher acidity than you'd find in warmer parts of Australia. The label itself is small, with a big personality in its names and packaging.

Savoury-edged and spicy. Pour it at 16–18°C with lamb chops, grilled sausages or a mushroom ragù. Good drinking now, and it will reward a few years in a cool, dark cellar.
