Equipo Navazos La Bota 99 Vino Blanco Florpower MMXIX Antes de la Flor is an unfortified old-vine Palomino from Sanlúcar, made with no biological ageing under flor.

Before fortification became the norm in Andalucía, the albariza soils around Jerez and Sanlúcar de Barrameda produced still white table wines, and the Florpower project is Equipo Navazos' attempt to see what those may have looked like. The fruit was hand harvested from old vines, some over 80 years of age, in the Pago Miraflores at Miraflores La Baja, Sanlúcar's most revered terroir. Where Macharnudo Alto in Jerez gives power and structure, the tosca cerrada albariza here tends towards roundness and floral charm. Unlike earlier Florpower releases, No. 99 was fermented naturally and raised for twelve months in a single 10,000-litre stainless steel tank rather than in cask. In the bodega it was protected from flor by topping up and kept on its lees, so this is Palomino vinified as a conventional white: a savoury vin de terroir of the bleach-white soils rather than a sherry. A food wine first and foremost, best over the next few years with grilled prawns, tortilla or manchego. Serve at 10-12°C.
