Equis Equinoxe Crozes-Hermitage 2024

Equis Equinoxe Crozes-Hermitage is an early-drinking northern Rhône Syrah given a short nine-day maceration.

Crozes-Hermitage is the largest appellation of the northern Rhône, spread around the hill of Hermitage, and its southern sector at Pont-de-l'Isère is warm, flat ground of alluvial gravel over clay that gives fleshier, more forward Syrah than the granite slopes to the north. Equis is the label of Maxime Graillot and Thomas Schmittel, run alongside Domaine des Lises. The fruit comes from a mature, organically farmed site owned and managed by a friend and neighbour of the Graillot family, and grower and winemaker work closely on it. Here the grapes were entirely destemmed and fermented in concrete tanks and large wooden tronconique vats with a degree of carbonic maceration, then matured for nine months in the same vessels. The short maceration is what keeps the wine light on its feet.

Made for drinking now and over the next three to four years. Serve at 16°C with grilled sausages, roast chicken or a charcuterie board.
