Description

Equis Saint-Joseph comes from two organically farmed parcels on the steep granite slopes of Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, the historic heart of the appellation.

Saint-Joseph runs for some fifty kilometres along the right bank of the northern Rhône, but its reputation rests on a short stretch of steep granite terraces opposite the hill of Hermitage, and Saint-Jean-de-Muzols is at the centre of it. Equis is Maxime Graillot's négociant label. Three-quarters of this blend comes from Syrah planted in the 1980s, the remainder from vines planted in the 1950s. Both parcels are farmed organically by the Desbos family, without herbicides, on gradients steep enough that all work is done by hand and by horse. Between 20 and 30 per cent whole bunches were used, and the wine matured for eleven months in used ex-Burgundy 228-litre casks followed by six months in tronconique vats. It was bottled unfiltered, and the style is layered and rocky, with taut red and blue fruit, crushed stone and dried dark flowers.

Good now with a decant and worth eight years in the cellar. Serve at 16 to 18°C with roast lamb, venison or a peppercorn steak.
