Description

Etienne Bodet Saumur blanc Graippeaux is a single-parcel Chenin Blanc made by a winemaker who worked as assistant at Clos Rougeard.

The white wines of Saumur come from Chenin Blanc grown on tuffeau limestone, the soft chalk that runs beneath the town and its villages, quarried for the local buildings and hollowed out for cellars. Vines root into fissured rock that drains hard and holds yields down, and the wines are typically firm, saline and slow to show themselves. Bodet learned the appellation as assistant winemaker at Clos Rougeard, the Saumur-Champigny estate that set the modern benchmark for the area, before bottling under his own name. Graippeaux is a named parcel kept apart and bottled on its own, following the practice that has become standard for serious Saumur blanc, where each site is pressed, fermented and raised separately so that soil and exposure carry through into the wine.

A serious, dry Chenin for the table and for the cellar; serve at 11 to 12 degrees with roast fish, veal or aged hard cheese.
