Fabien Coche Monthelie Les Barbières Premier Cru 2023

Fabien Coche Monthelie Les Barbières is a premier cru red from the village tucked in behind Volnay.

Monthelie sits at the mouth of the valley that climbs to Auxey-Duresses, directly behind Volnay, and is planted almost entirely to Pinot Noir. Its best vineyards are a continuation of the Volnay slope on the same limestone, which is why good Monthelie shares something of Volnay's fine boned, red fruited style at a fraction of the price, while the parcels turned into the side valley are cooler and firmer. Les Barbières is one of the commune's premiers crus on the slope above the village. Fabien Coche farms from Meursault, a short distance across the fields, holding small parcels through these neighbouring villages alongside the domaine's white wines.

Fine framed and lively, it is at its best between five and ten years and suits poultry, pork and lighter game; serve at around 16 degrees.
