Description
Fabien Duveau Saumur Blanc Bois du Chêne Brézé is a dry Chenin Blanc made from vines planted in 1960 on the Brézé hillside, of which just one barrel is made.
Saumur sits at the eastern edge of Anjou, where the vineyards lie over deep beds of tuffeau, the soft chalky limestone quarried for the region's châteaux and cellars. Within it the hill of Brézé has long been held as one of the great sites for Chenin Blanc, its shallow clay and flint topsoil over fractured limestone giving wines that carry ripeness alongside a firm, saline cut. Bois du Chêne comes from a parcel planted in 1960, and just one barrel is made here. Vines of that age crop lightly and ripen evenly, and a bottling of this size points to a wine fermented and raised in wood, aged on its fine lees before being bottled dry.
Structured and mineral rather than showy, it suits roast poultry, river fish in a butter sauce and mature goat's cheese; serve at around 12 degrees.
