Description
Fabien Duveau Saumur blanc Poyeux is a dry Chenin Blanc from a lieu-dit better known for red wine, bottled in magnum.
Saumur blanc is Chenin Blanc grown on the Turonian tuffeau of the right bank of the Loire, a soft white limestone lying under a thin clay and flint topsoil and riddled with the quarry cellars used for ageing wine. The Poyeux lieu-dit sits among the Saumur Champigny communes south east of Saumur and is far better known for Cabernet Franc, so a white bottling from it is unusual. Chalk subsoil of this type gives Chenin high acidity and a taut, saline finish, and growers here generally press whole bunches, ferment slowly and age on lees in barrel or larger wood to build texture without covering the site.
Dry and chalky with real cut, it suits oysters, pike quenelles, roast white fish and goat cheese; serve at 11 to 12 degrees.
